Heiner Bastian – Anselm Kiefer Wasserfarben

Announcement

BASTIAN is pleased to announce the release of the new publication Anselm Kiefer – Watercolours. Edited by Heiner Bastian, with a foreword by Christian Ring and texts by Peter-Klaus Schuster and Heiner Bastian, the book comprises 104 pages and 33 colour plates.

Twenty-seven years after an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York dedicated to Anselm Kiefer’s works on paper, this book accompanies a new exhibition at the Nolde Museum in Seebüll, presenting a significant selection of watercolours created over several decades.

A visual universe unfolds—from the artist’s early beginnings to his contemporary work—long before his international renown was established. The depicted themes engage with recent German history, songs, legends and myths, Romantic literature, and fundamental philosophical questions, which Kiefer explored through Heidegger’s Being and Time and Bloch’s The Principle of Hope.

Above all internal dialogues stands the ongoing conversation Kiefer conducts with both ancient and modern poetry. On the occasion of receiving the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 2008, the artist remarked that “poems are the world.”

Heiner Bastian, editor of this book, has devoted himself to Kiefer’s work from an early stage and is regarded as one of its most insightful interpreters.

Peter-Klaus Schuster, art historian, exhibition curator, and museum director, served from 1999 to 2008 as General Director of the National Museums in Berlin and also as Director of the National Gallery.

Christian Ring has been Director of the Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde Foundation since 2013.
